What it’s like to undertake an Undergraduate Placement at Farrow Walsh

His role as an undergraduate engineer involved working with the structures and civils team on current projects, which required either draughting or structural design work using a variety of programs such as AutoCAD, Tedds and FastTrak Building Designer and Connections.

Fahad said:

‘My placement at Farrow Walsh was a great opportunity for me to learn, develop my skills and experience life in industry. I was given the opportunity to work on different scales of projects, from small domestic plans to 15-plot housing developments.

‘Everybody was very welcoming and helpful. They made me feel like an important member of the team. As time progressed I was given autonomy over my own work, which involved answering client and site queries, meeting deadlines, compiling calculation reports and preparing drawings.

‘Each day at Farrow Walsh is different and working in a friendly and vibrant environment gives you the opportunity to develop your skills on multiple facets. As a member of the structures team, I was able to work with experienced structural engineers as well as graduates. This gave me the opportunity to assess my current skills and compare to what is required to become a professional and competent engineer.

Farrow Walsh believe in nurturing the skills of their full time staff and their placement students. And as part of Fahad’s placement he was given the opportunity to sit in on many CPD seminars and attend an individual training course in Leeds, on the design of temporary works design.

Fahad continued:

‘Overall, my placement year has been a fantastic experience and one which will put me in great stead to do well in the future. I have gained an array of new skills and hope to utilise these in the final year of my degree and my professional career. As well as gaining technical skills I have developed my confidence significantly. Ultimately it is the experience which has benefited me the most.’
